Mr Beattie answered a number of questions pnt by the Chairman. / Mr Hampton, representative of the workmen, addressed the Bo<ud, and sommarised the evidence. He hoped the enquiry would result in the complete vindication of the characters of the men and lead to improved faoili, ties being provided, whioh would make the Addington Workshops the leading ones in the Dominion. Mr Beattie also addressed the Board. He stated that since 1900, Addington had been supplied with plant and maohiuery valued at £30,761, and additions to buildings costing about £IO,OOO. It had been fully reoognised that the plant and accommodation were insufficient for the rapidly growing work aud the matter was discussed with the General Manager. The funds available were expended to the best advantage of all the railway workshops, for others besideß Addington required additional plant. He gave figures showing that the oost of construction at Addington oompared favourably with private firms. Mr Ronayne's informant's allegations were, he submitted, unwarranted and unsubstantiated.
