RAILWAY AND OTHER QUESTIONS. The Chamber of Oommeroe met last evening. Present: Messrs J. M. Johnston (president), his Worship the Mayor (Mr J. A. Nash), Oapt. Haydon, Oohen, Hodder, Gibbous, G. W. Harden, Goldingham, and Oapt. Preece. An apology was receievd from Mr M. A. Eliott, who had been called to Wellington. The General Manager of Railways wrote with regard to alleged shortage of trucks nt Foxfcon that lie could not discover that there had been suoli a shortage, but would look into < any speoifio instances of delays that were brought before liiin. The ohairman said that the General Manager of Railways said that sometimes when steamers were delayed on the bar the Department had to get together and'send 200 trucks to dear. It was no wonder that under such , oiroumstauoos there should be occasional delay. Respecting an invitation from the » Wellington Chamber of Oommeroe to be represented at a conference of New. Zealand Chambers to be held at Wellington on April 14th, it was suggested by Mr Cohen that Mr Alfred Seifert he asked to read a paper hefore the conference upon s tho offeot of legislation on the flax industry. It was resolved that the president and Mr Seifert represent the Cham- , ber as delegates and that the president add the names of any other members of the Oounoil who wonld be able to go. It was resolved that Mr Seifert be asked ta prepare the paper suggested. The Attorney-General wrote asking suggestions as to amendments of the law of baukruptoy, as he was anxious, before taking further action, to ascertain the wishes and oipnions of the mercantile community on the point, as the practical experience aooumulated since. 1893 (when the present law came into • - operation) had in all probability brought numerous defects to the notioe of business men.
