SOCIALISM AND BAKERS' CARTS. j At last night's meeting of • the Fabian Society Mr Tom Mann delivered an address upon socialism. Mr Mann claimed that the machin- x ery and the application of science and minute division of labour in production had ruthlessly destroyed the artistic and unequalled • orafta* N manship of the Middle Ages, and caused what is known as the "ludustrial Revolution." This, he said* succeeded the system called capitalisation, under which one class, by labour of hand and brain, produce* the world's wealth, while a second class, without exertion of any kind whatever, appropriates merely by virtue of its ownership of mines,, tools, forests and land, the main. portion of the prodnoe. From this. system there can, he considered, be only one renort, its complete destruction and the substitution of a 00operative ccsmionnwealth This i» the natural trend of modom industry. Capitalisation is perishing" under the burden of its ov?u ouccess. The lecturer illustrated Jii? argument by to industrial revolution in America and Japan, and emphasised hie belief that K.Z. suiters under precisely the same system, as other countries, but for the time being is saved from its direot consequences of that system by the sparsity of population. He told how in Melbourne they bad established & co-operative Socialistic bakery with three carts, and a Socialistic Sunday schcol with 13 teachers and 810 pupils, and were going to produce socialistic co-operative boots and clothes, and other necessaries, while they indulged in most refining and elevating meetings and discussions.. At the request of local Socialists Mr Mann has consented to visit Palmerston early in July.
