ESTABLISHED 1875. Manawatu Daily Times. The Oldest Manawatu Journal. Conducted by E. D. HOBEN, Editor & Proprietor. Published Every Morning. THURSDAY, APRIL 23, 1908. THE MAYORALTY.
Yebterdat the nominations closed for the Mayoralty and the contest now enters upon its official and final stage s. The feature of the day was the nomination of Cγ. Haydon. We understand that in the morning he had decided to do the right thing, and sacrificing his own feelings, to stand"<!own in order to leave a clear field .for the contest between Or. Nash and the Mayor. It was clearly seen that he could not win himself, but that he might take votes from Or. Nash which would otherwise be given, to the cause of reform, and in this way would materially help the Mayor to slip in. Recognising the value of Or. Hajdon as a vote splitter, there was consequently consternation when it was understood that he would retire, and pressure was brought to bear to keep him in
the field in the Essex interest. Unfortnnately Or. Haydon yielded to this false counsel, and decided to go on. We can only trust under the circumstances to the good sense of every elector with any sense of responsibility to recognise that any vote cast for Or. Haydon is given for all that Mr Essex stands for. The only practical way for friends of good municipal government, and the salvation of the town from its present municipal blight, is to iguore Or. Haydon altogether even, though, under other circumstances many of them might have felt bound to vote for him. lo do otherwise is to assist the cunning efforts that are being made to maintain the present undesirable condition of things municipal and to assist in the triumph of the underground engineering which would use Or. Haydon as a blind. It is a sorry sight to see a man of Cγ. Haydon's standing being blindly led to the destruction, not only of himself, but of those whom he should be assisting aa friends. It should nerve those who value the good name of the town to greater effort than ever.
