"HAERE TONU, NGATIPOROU.

We wrote on the remarkable ex- , ample of progression among the Ngatiporon in the East Cape country, the men with 80,000 fine sheep, a couple of hundred miles of selferected telephones, a system of hygiene and sanitation which the Chief Health Officer has declared to be better than that of many European settlements, their own health ; inspectors paid by themselves, etc. Muoh of this was due to the propaganda work of Mr Ngata, M.P., and elioited the admiration of Sir Robert Stout \vhen he was up there the other day as Chief Native Commisssioner. Now there is further evidence of Ngatiporou progress. They informed the Minister of Health (the Hon. G. Fowlds) that they would erect cottage hospitals if the Government would consent to maintain them. The Government has consented. Two* of these hospitals will be set up in separate kaiangas, and each will be placed in charge of a certificated European nurse, assisted by a trained Maori nurse, who will be available to attend to cases at a distance from the institution. The hospitals will not take surgical cases or other very, difficult ones. The cost of maintenance will come out of the native vote.
