BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING.

A special mcetiug of the Borough Council was held last evoning. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Stnbbs, Armstrong, Nash, Matheson, Haydou, Holbeu, and Bennett. The engineer's report for Novem* berl 9th recommending the dismissal of 3 rubbish-cart drivers was adopted and it was resolved that Price, Hyde and Farrell, receive a week's notice of dismissal each.

With regard to the complaint of local plumbers as to a monopoly practically being granted one type of ventilator, the engineer intimated that the ventilator now used was the , best and cheapest when the tests were made by the special committee, and that an open pipe with a cap on was not an efficient ventilator for sewers. The Council decided that it coahl not see its way to alter the requirement of the present ventliator but will be prepared at any time to consider any other ventilator of equal efficiency and cost which the plumbers may submit.

The amendmeut of the Shops and 3ffices Act, aud Factories Act respecting the half-holiday were considered aud held over until a poll is demanded.

It was resolved that if the Health Department required the services of Mr Perry, the public health officer, the Department should pay the Council £50 per annum towards that officer's salary. The engineer was instructed to prepare plans for a second stop-bank at Hokowhitu from the Eduation Reserve southward, providing the Government engineer, Mr Robinson, approves. Robinson's opinion as to the advisability of substituting ferro-coocrete groins for piles in river protection. The resignation of Mr Brongh as caretaker of the Sports Ground was accepted and Mr Dowlin was ap* pointed as caretaker under the curator, Mr Smith. The resignation of Mr Were as caretaker of the weigh-bridge was also accepted, and Mr H. Ward was appointed to the charge of the weighbridge and to fill in his time in theSquare. It was decided to call applications; for the position of gardener to the Square reserves. The offer made by Mr J. Lane to supply boulders to the crusher at 2s 5d per cubic yd. was accepted.

The Finance Committee was saked to fix charges for the weighbridge. The tender of Mr Pringle for dog collars at 6s and 4s per dozen and Is per doz. for re-badging was accepted. . The request of the telephone exchange for water for a Pelton wheel was granted at Is 6d per 1,000 gallons. « The engineer wsa instructed to call for tenders for pasturing sheep on the Sports Ground returnable at next Council meeting. It was resolved to instruct the engineer to continue the present method of cleaning out the water tables by day labour, and also to continue tarring and sand-blasting, the engineer being allowe dto make arrangements with any old men requiring piece-work. The engineer was also instructed to consider the advisability of purchasing horses and drays in view of the present scarcity of teams. Or. Holben complained that tarring was too far in advance of" the sanding as at present carried out.
