At a presentation of football trophies in Napier the Mayor referred to football as played in 1698. It was, he said, a much rougher game than now, as the following death notice which a friend of his had come across in an English parish register would show:—"John and Richard Gregory killed by Old Gunter. Gunter's sons and the Gregories fell together at football. Old Gunter drew his dagger and broke both their heads. They died within a week." The mayor said this notice puzzled him. What did they do with Old Gunter? Did they disqualify him for the rest of the season or treat him as a first offender? (Laughter.) Then who was Old Gunter? Was he the referee? (Renewed laughter). The Mayor conoluded by saying that if Old Gunter was the referee he knew how to enforce his decisions better than is known now-a-days.

The French telephone authorities have invented a new and horrible apparatus which is to be called the "howler" (says a Paris correspondent). It is to prevent anyone forgetting to replace his receiver at the end of a call, and emits a sound resembling that of a dog in pain. It is not likely to be popular, but it will be useful.
