A CHAIRMAN'S COMMENTS.

At the annnal meeting of , the North Canterbury Charitable Aid Board today the chairman said it was to be regretted that in such prosperous times as New Zealand continued to enjoy there should be the need for so much expenditure of public money on out-door relief. It was to be hoped the importance of the whole subject might soon engage the serious attention of the Legislature, and the experience of 22 years' operation of the existing Act turned to good acconnt in any proposed amendments, especially with regard to the liability now laid on district boards for the cost of maintaining a large number of children committed to the care of the State under the Industrial Schools Act.
