TE ORANGA HOME INCIDENT.

Per Press Association.

Christchurch, November 29.

| At a meeting of the Christchurch Women's Christian Temperance Union, a vigorous discussion took place concerning the recent Te Oranga Home trouble, and the following resolutions were passed "That this Union strongly protests againnt the inhuman system of punishment as practised at the Te Oranga Home, as savouring more of barbaric times than the twenith century. The Union considers that it is degrading to humiliate the unfortunate girl inmates in their own eyes and in those of their companions. By flogging, cutting off the hair, cell punishment, and similar brutalities incalculable harm is done in many ways, and such treatment of girls is an insult to the womanhood of the colony, and should not be tolerated by New Zealand citizens.''

'' The Union calls upon the Minister of Education to alter these barbaric practices by introducing a more scientific and enlightened system, and so allow the members to feel assured that his action in all matters is in the direction of justice and humanity."

"That the recent circumstances only emphasise the necessity for local boards of control composed of men and women, which have often been asked ; for bjr this union and other women's societies. This union also emphasises the great need for careful classification of the inmates."

4 ' That a vote of thanks be accorded to the editor of the Lyttelton Times for his consistent and able advocacy of a more humane and enlightened system of management in connection 1 with the Te Orangi Home and other State institutions."
