The Premier of Tonga, who visited the spot, states that there appear to be vents not far from each other. There was a ruehing, boominir sound and columns of smoke and steam, mixed with black pumice, were thrown into the air with tremendous noise. One column was olose on a hundred feet high. The vents were playing alternately and should the outbreak continue the formation of a new island is predicted.
