In 1849 giving a receipt for any sum over £10 was not quite so easy as it is now, when the affixing of a penny stamp is all that is necessary to satisfy the Stamp Act. In 1849 a receipt had to be taken to the Stamp Office and impressed with a die stamp, for which a charge of sixpence was made. A receipt for the undertaker's charge for one of the earliest funerals in Wellington, that of a lady, wife of a Government official, has been shown to us, says a contemporary. The charge was 4514 6s 6d, and the reoeipt is impressed as above.
