Many interesting facts ' regarding British India, with its population of 280,000,000 and its area of 1,087,204 square miles, appear in a Blue Book just issued on the condition of India in 1906-6. India's debt amounts to £280,511,480 of which £146,467,489 is held in England. The Government owns over 22,000 miles of the total 28,000 miles of railways in the country, and a profit of £2,001,966 resulted from the year's working. The death rate for the whole of India was 85.96 per 1000 of the population. The number of lepers is 94,840, equal to 48 men and 17 women per 100,000 of the population. The deaths from plague numbered 1,069,100 in the year. India's rainfall averaged S6in. fox the year, but the amount varied from 4in in Sind and Outch to 177 in. in Tenasserim.
