THE GENUS POT HUNTER,

We are sorry that the Stipendiary Magistrate could not sea his way to inflict a more substantial penalty on the individual convicted yesterday of wild duck shooting in the clo3e season. Convictions in such cases are unfortunately very hard to obtain and when they are obtained it would be well to make the penalty of a substantial and deterrent charaoter. A man who will shoot game in the resting season has not the instincts of a sportsman; he is a pot-hunter of the most contemptible type. Unfortunately the sound of gunshots is not unfamiliar in the vicinity of Hokowbitu, where it is the practice of hungry vandals to lie await morn and eve for the grey duck as they issue from the lagoons on the wing to and from their feeding grounds. It is hoped that the acclimatisation authorities will redouble their efforts to get rid of this nuisance.
