; The 'Sydney Daily Telegraph writing ipith regard* to the second day's racing of the Australian Jockey Club's meeting, ■ays :—•■ Nothing occurred to Bend that irresistible wave of depression which some times visits racecourses on the day of a big handicap, over Eandwick. Out of biz races, four were won by favourites, and though an outsider in Maniopoto won the Metropolitaq, there was a lot of money piled on the handsome brown late. in the betting. There was a wave, but it was a New Zsaland tidal wave, horses from the island colony absolutely sweeping the board. They opened with Machine Gun in the Shorts, went on with lsolt in the Spring Maiden Stakes, continued with Maniopoto in the Metropolitan, returned again to the attack in the Steeplechase with Sultaua, and incidentally filling also the next three places, pursued the path of viotory with Sun God in the New Stakes, and wound up a glorious day with Nightfall in the Squatters' Handicap, which Hewitt, the crack jockey from over the water, snatched on the post from Canteen, Sir Rupert Clarke's representative, by a superb bit of horsemanship, The performance was unparalleled. No previous visiting team has ever had anything like such a ran of luck. And it wasn't altogether luck. Machine Gun carried the thumping impost of 10.13 over his six furlongs and won easily; Maniapoto was going away from his horses at tho finish; Sultana won the prettiest steeplechase ever seen on the course with something to spare ; while Isolt and Sun God eimply tolerated the presence of their opponents on the track. Nightfall's was the only narrow victory of the day. It was no wonder that puzzled habitues of the course who had vainly endeavored to pick an Australian to stem the victorious rush of the visitors inquired as they reached for their tram: " "What time does the New Zealand boat start ?" " Theße are the New Zealand Bports," said a lucky man. as IsoU cantered on in front of her field. " Blow me if I don't go and stack a quid on Maniapoto after that. They .can't lose." As he had no difficulty in ;gettiDg 30 to 1 when the betting opened, jhe waß wise in his generation.
