Monthly Meeting.

The councillors present at the meeting of the Manawatu County Council yesterday were Messrs! Hammond (in the chair), G. Kendall; F. Robinson, T. Masters and Clariss. CORRESPONDENCE.

Mr W. J. Gifkins wrote resigning his position as poundkeeper at Sanson.—Accepted.

A petition was received from the ratepayers of Waitohi Riding asking for an improvement in the grade of Penny's Line at a place known as Ellerm's cutting. The sum of £ 26 14s accompanied the petition as a donation towards the cost of the work. The overBeer's estimate of the cost of the work was £210.—The Council decided not to do the work.

Tho Colonial Secretary wrote pointing out that it would be necessary for the Council to confirm the petition for the conversion of Bongotea into a town district, and the Council decided to do as requested. REPORTS.

Tho clerk reported that the balances on the various accounts were as follows: General account, debit £3412 6s 4d; loan account, cr £1348 3a 7d; net debit balance £2064 2s 9d. Eiding accounts: Bandon, cr £156 18s 6d; Mount Stewart dr £Q 2s 6d; Waitohi, dr A67 5s 5d ; Bongotea, dr i>l43 9s 3d; Carnarvon, dr £53 la 3d ; Kawakawa, dr £174 2s Id; Awahou, dr £127 11s 9d.

The tramway manager reported that A credit balance existed on last month's working of £93 15a Id. Messrs Dimock and Co. had been granted permission to erect yards at Ohakea, on the understanding that if the Council did not approve of the arrangements they would have to be removed. The Council was expected to pay the cost of erecting the leading race. The manager also reported that during the coming year it would be necessary to relay a considerable length of line with new rails. Last month 536 bales of wool and 6980 feet of timber had been carried to Foxton. Passenger fares had amounted to £63 3s. - ; ■ , . TENDERS.

Tenders wore accepted as follows:— Contract No. 184, Stuart and Sons, 2s 6d per yard; No. 185, Stuart and Sons, 8s per yard; No. 186, W. E. Anderson, 4s per yard ; No. 187, James Lobb, 3s 6d per yard; No. 188, Stuart and Sons, 3s 9d per yard; No. 189, W. Anderson, 4s 6d per yard ; No. 190, H. Hight, 5s per yard; No. 191, Stuart and Son, 4s 6d per yard; No. 192, Tippler Bros., 8s 4d per yard. The tender of F. H. Vile at 5d each was accepted for 6000 dog collars. EESOLUTIONS. That tenders be called to be in by next meeting for forming and metalling seven chains on the Foxton • Sandon Soad. —That the Inspector be instructed to inspect the portion of Pyke's road which requires formation, and to report to the Council at next meeting.—That H. Vile be appointed registrar of dogs for the current year, and that the fee be 2s 6d for sheep, cattle and rabbit dogs and 5s for all othara ; such fees to be payable to Mr Vile at Bongotea. DEPUTATION. Messrs Hunt, Dalton, and Sanson asked the Council to metal the lower part of Jones1 road. They understood Vie money had been borrowed, but they •aid the report had been circulated that the Council did not intend to spend it while a sawmill in the locality continued to work, as the carts from the latter Would cat it up. The deputation said Ihsy did not want their experiences of last year, when the road was absolutely impassable, repeated.

Cr Kendall said the ratepayers were paying for the upkeep of the roads, and if they wanted the money spent the Council should spend it. The chairman said the Council would do the best it could, add tenders would in all probability be called for next meeting. A resolution to this effect was eventaally carried.
