BOROUGH ABATTOIRS.

Purchase Of Land Authorised

Loan To be Raised

_At the Borough Council meeting last night Cr Browning moved that not less than six or more than seven acres of Messrs Carter and Bawstvon'a section, No. 15, on the Foxton Line, be at once surveyed, and immediately upon the completion of the same, the Council at once take steps to complete the purchase of the said land at the price offered, namely, £100 per acre ; and that the two councillors to sign all documents in connection with tho abattoir and the site be Crs Goodger and France. Cr Haydon moved an amendment that the matter of purchasing the land for abattoirs be held over until the question whether tbe Bacon Company will be erecting works in that vicinity is decided, and to see whether the two establishments can be amalgamated. Ho did not consider the Council was' acting in the best interests of tbe Borough if they rushed into the arrangement as proposed. If it v.m proposed to erect a bacon factory with up-to-date appliances within the vicinity of the abattoir, it would be better to defer the propoßalaud ccc if the two things could not be amalgamated.

Cr Jack said as it was two or three years since the Council had been dealing with the abattoir, it was out of all reason to wait any longer. The Mayor remarked that he thought the Bacon Company were paying the Council a just compliment by pointing out that they had been wise in their generation in securing the section. Now the Council had consent to the latter, it waa better to proceed with the work. (Hear, hear.) They would, of course, do what they could to further the interests of the Bacon Company, as it would be bringing a fresh industry that would benefit the town.

Cr Tolley understood there was likely to be a great length of time before they saw the bacon factory realised. A. large expenditure of motiey was ivquired, and he understood that the guarantors to the bank were not prepared to enter into the expense. When this section was first mentioned to the Council, he understood it belonged to Mr Freeman, and was offered to them at about £50 an acre. It certainly seemed that Carter and Bawstron had crept in behind the Council whilst they were engaged in legal technicalities to secure consent to the Bite, and were trjing to force the price of the land up. , The- Mayor said that Before he came into office Carter and Eawstron were in possession of the site. It might have been Freeman's property preyious to his coming into the Council.

Cr Essex pointed out that the chief veterinarian had said when in Palmereton that the Bacon Company could not be connected with the abattoir. Pigs could be killed there, but would have to be taken away to be cured. Cr Haydon's amendment not being seconded, the motion was put and carried.

It was resolved on the motion of Or Goodger that the Engineer be instructed to at once hare all details completed in connection with the abattoir site, and plans, and that the Council empower the Abattoir Committee to call tenders for the erection of the abattoir, and such other work as may be necessary in connection therewith immediately arrange* ments are sufficiently advanced, and that the Town Clark be instructed to apply to the Government for the £1000 granted for abattoirs.
