ANOTHER STAGE
The Borough Council has advanced another stage with its abattoir project, and has effectually shaken off the opposition of the Kairanga County Council. The finding of Mr Thomson was, all must admit, perfectly logical and perfectly fair, and under ordinary circumstances nothing would be left but to go on with the work of erection. There are two reasons why the Council should pause before coming to a definite conclusion to spend £6000 or £7000 on the proposed abattoir. The first is that such an expenditure is quite unnecessary in view of the fact that the Longburn Freezing Coy can do the killing for the Borough equally well and probably more cheaply, and the second is that an abattoir on the proposed site would have the crucial defect that it would not be able to handle the offal which would have to be carted away at great expense to be dealt with elsewhere.
