ROADS AND BRIDGES.
Wanganui On The Job.
Press Association,
Wellington, Last Night. A Wanganui deputation waited on the Premier and Minister for Public Works to-night, asking for Government assistance in repairing the extensive damage caused to the Wanganui bridges by the flood last June. It was urged that the reclamatiqn works carried out by the Railway Department were in part responsible for weakening the approaches to the bridge.
The Premier promised to ask the Minister of Bailways to get a report on the matter.
The deputation also complained that money voted for the Eaetabi-Parapara road was not expended. A recent meeting was held at Wanganui, whereat the opinion was expressed that votes often lapsed with the object of swelling the surplus.
The Minister pointed out that this was a common fallacy. Lapsed public works did not swell surpluses, having no connection with the Consolidated Fund. As a matter of fact, more had been spent on the roads in question than was actually authorised. Mr Seddofl announced it was his intention, next session to ask for a much larger vote for roads and bridges.
