Press Association. Christchobch, SaturdaVfair Joseph Ward received several deputations this morning. Replying to the memhers of the Utility Poultry Olub, who asked for a concession for an egg-laying competition. Sir Joseph expressed pleasure at the steps being taken to foster the new industry. He would see what railway concession* could he given for birds travelling to and from competitions, and would at once authorise the conveyance of materials on terms similar to those obtaining for the railage of exhibition pens to poultry shows. A deputation of hairdressera' assistants brought under the Minister* notice the fact that some of the saloons were leasing chairs, the result being thai lessees, though employing no labour, were placed in the position of employers-. These lessees were able to keep open at hours when employers were closed under the arbitration award. The majority of employers were against the praotice. Sir -Joseph promised to bring the matter ! before the Minister of Labour, saying he thought that Parliament would provide a remedy, but the Union should! show its earnestness by preparing » peti ion for presentation to the Minister, Alarm has been caused in som* quarters by the rumour that a gentleman of world-wide reputation as » crack-sman and general criminal is in ' Cbristchm-oh. It is stated that the polio have warned jewellers and others likely to receive attention to be on their guards
