THE ABATTOIRS.
The butchers have got to make up their minds. The Health; authorities have definitely decided that the private slaughterhouses must be closed, at the end of this month. Yesterday's deputation showed that the ratepayers have determined that the existing condition of things must not be continued. The Mayor's reply to that deputation confirmed the impression that he speaks for the majority of the councillors when he says that the meat for consumption in this town must hereafter be killed under official inspection, The onus is now on the butchers, They must take at once some definite steps to come into touch with public opinion. If they attempt to evade the issue they will have to shut up shop. The local consumer is not concerned as to whether his meat comes from Feilding or Longburn, but he must be fed, and if the butchers do not feel equal-to the task, others will take their places and reap the handsome profits which these tradesmen have in the past enjoyed. Nobody wants to be hard on the butchers, but everybody wants clean meat killed under strict inspection.
