Melbourne, Last Night. In the House Mr Cook moved in favour of the establishment of a Commonwealth Life and Accident Assurance Department under the control and guarantee of the Federal Government. He advocated its establishment on similar lines to the New Zealand State offices which have risen from ninth to seventh position auiougst the Australasian offices, The mover advocated compulsory assurance provision as the basis of old-age pensions. On the suggestion of Sir a. Turner, who considered it a very important subject, and promised to consult his colleagues, the debate was adjourned till May 19th.
