THOROUGHBRED HORSE SALE.

-: . (By " Fetlock.") -Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., in conjunction with the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd,, will hold an important sale of thoroughbreds at Palmerston North on Friday, the 29th April, the day following the Manawatu I!acing Club's Autumu fixature. This is the twelfth annual sale of the progeny of Te Mahanga stud.. In company with Mr W. J. Dougkfl I paid a visit of inspection to the yoarlings and ) was much taken with their appoarance. The two colts first came under review. The Torpedo—Parlour Maid is a nicely grown bay, and shows strength and quality all over, and has tho appearance of a two-year-old. He is excellently put together, and will make a fast racehorse, and a first-class station sire at the end of his turf career. He took second prize for yearling colts at tho Hawke's Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Show against the same stud's Nyraph '' colt; who secured the first prize. He is I related to such good ones us Aide-dc-Camp and Torowai. The Nymph colt is exceptionally bred, being by Torpedo, while his dam is by Ingomar, from "Woodnymph, by Musket from Sylvia. He is a low-set youngster, with good quarters and strong understandings; in fact he impresses mo as one of the best of this dam's foals, and 6he lias thrown many good • ones, including Orion, lolanthe, and the three-year-old Gold , Crown in Mr J. Prosser's Porirua stable. The Rivulet filly by Torpedo, and consequently a full sister to Brooklet, Tho Brook, Materoa, The Shannon, la, and Waftarere, is well grown, and shows in a marked degree the family likeness. She will take a little time to develop, but the blood is there, as Rivulet has proved the most prolific winner on Te Mahanga. The next filly introduced to notice is by Mahaki, from Waikaha, a half-sister to Rivulet, by Torpedo. She has a fine head, shoulders, and middlepiece, being closely ribbed up and a i clean set of legs. Waikaha is the dam of Waiwhera, which won the Winter Cup; of 500sovs at the C.J C. Winter Meeting, hesidas a number of other races. The Mahaki-Maude filly is one I should strongly recommend to those in search of a handsome and racer-like filly. Besides this, she comes from racing families on both sides. Maude is by St Leger from Hilda, the heading of winning sires in this colony for several years. Hilda won a large number of important cups and handicaps while on the turf, and was considered the best mare of her years. ISehua, Maude's first youngster to sport silk,'has won the majority of races for which he has started. A bay gelding by Torpedo—H.M.S. Pinafore.is the first ■of this mare's get. The blood of Torpedo and Dreadnought has already proved a successful cross, and this youngster does not lack quality, being an evenlymade, sleepy, and solidly-built gentleman. The next is a full brother to Armistice, being by Mahaki from that exceptionally bred mare Melinite, and without doubt he is the best Mahaki I have yet seen. He is brown in colour, with a strong masculine appearance both fore and aft; evenly made and . deep-set back and fiat-boned legs of the best quality. He should race early, and " when seen out I predict he will prove a racehorse in the best company. A gelding by Mahaki from The Brook takes after the dam, and is one of the biggest yearlings on the station. He is a full brother to Manawaru, who, although only just starting racing, has had several wins. He is massive, but withal has ho loose lumber about him, and his legs should stand plenty of work. As The Brook is a daughter of Eivulet this youngster should fetch a good =figure on the. day. The brown filly by Mahaki "from Basilisk is a compact young lady with stout forequarters, strong short back, and reachy behind. The dam of this filly.is full sister to Vista, who has produced winners ia Vallance, Comfort, .Hprouta and Ballistite. A filly containing the" old-fashioned and modern blood is by Torpedo from Secret. She is the best youngster yet thrown by this mare, showing strong, wiry legs that should stand any work. A filly built on small lines is by Mahaki from Ladysmith, by Torpedo from Lady Maxwell, the dam of Mutiny, who won more hurdles and steeplechases of first-class than any other horse in the country. The filly is handsome and tho evenness of her build confirms me in the opinion that she will race early. The Torpedo —Whaitiri is another filly that will stand a lot of looking at. She resembles her dam closely, exhibiting the characteristics of the Musket type. This filly is close to the ground, with the best of legs, and is strong all over, and gives every indication of coming early. Whaitiri herself was a sterling performer, and she has produced others in TJa, Aio, Marino, Quiltiri, Waipuld, Sheet Lightning, Waipaoa, Waitoa, Hzki, Whangamoana and Matiri. She is certain to be sought after in the ring by a strong connection. A black gelding by Torpedo from Maori Belle is a likely looking youngster, and as >a 2-year-old brother ia also to be sold, I would advise the one owner securing both. Scarcely a fault ca» be found in the conformation of the Mahaki—Waipurata filly. She is oneof the best to be offered, and has the typical head and racy quarters of a galloper both in front and behind, neatly ribbed up, short saddle, excellent gasMns, and well-turned hocks. She will ar*ce early and stand a heavy preparation. Another that should cause some strong bidding ie a gelding by Mahaki from Kissmaiy. This youngster is her first foal, and is quite equal in point of quality to both sire and dam. Kissmary is by Hotchkiss from St. Mary, by St. Leger, and as the Musket and St. Leger cross is a fashionable one, the gelding is io be recommended. A black filly by Mahaki from Vista is on the small side, but she is compact, and will coma early: Comfort and Vallance are both good performers, and are out of Viso. Another black filly that shows quality is by Quilt from Waiau. She is a reachy youngster, w«ll grown, and possesses • •trong v set of legs and capital hocks. Waiau is also half-sister to Rivulet, and produced winners in Culcltta and Tomairangi, the only two of her stock that have raced. The gelding by Mahaki from Young Uira is a strongbuilt horse,, and should carry weight over any distance. Young Uira is out of Uira, who threw Whaitiri. The brown gelding by Mahaki from Javeline Is one that takes my fancy, and he descends from racing strains. The next xmder review is the fine upstanding gelding by Torpedo from whose dam Onyx was one of the very best mares ever introduced into New Zealand. Nordenfelt sprang from this mare, and besides proving his abilities on the turf, he was a most successful sire. The gelding .is built similarly to his full-brother Cruesot, and should fetch a tall price if landed safely in the sale ring. After him, my next introduction was a filly by the Englishbred sire and dam Pilgrim's Progress, from Lady Heart respectively. Lady Heart has a pedigree of undoubted strain, tracing back to Hermit (the sensatioaal horse of his year), from Bright Eyes, by Arbitration, sire of Kilwarlin, and again tracing back to the Stock well— Tombstone and Alice Hawthore blood. Pilgrim's Progress is by Isonomy (sire ot Isinglass, Seabreeze, Common, Gallinule, and a large number of other winners). Gallinule was at the head of winning airea in England last year, -while Pilgrim's Progress stood close up for winning sires in Australia last year, and include Abundance, Diffidence, iiieutenant Bill, Vanity Fair, Palmer, Haiaault, Progredier, Felicitious, Sojourner, Athanic, Feud, Yashmak, Bapid Pilgrim, and other winners of the V.E.C. and A.J.C. Derbies, Sydney Cup, AJ.C. City Handicap, Caulfield Cup, Fulham Park Plate, S.A..J.C. Derby, Mor pethville Plate, Third Caulfield Futurity Stakes, Brisbane Cup, Moreton Handicap and other races. The filly to be offered is a late foal and fin tho small side. However, the blood is there. A bay gelding by Torpedc from Bonny Blink completes the list tc he offered, and is a neat, even-made .youngster. The hatch will be on view at Mr E, D. Browne's paddocks the day before the sale, when J would advise intending purchasers to view the various colts.
