THE WAY NOT TO.
fTo the Editor.) ; Sir, -The schedule of exhibits issued in connection with the .Winter Show has conic under nay notice. As a friend to tho Society which organises the show I should like to draw attention to^ tlio meagre ana inadequate lists of exmbits called for in the horticultural section, with a vi'-w to" the amendment of the schedule for future shows. Sufficiently substantial prizes are offered for collections of pot plants of various kinds, but the number of plants in each collection ib so large that competition will be practically limited to nurserymen and those who are the happy possessors of large greenhouses. No prizes whatever are given for cut flowers or made-up specimens of the flourist's art, or single pot plants, and such as many a flower lover could show. At the last Winter Show a similar mistake was made, with the result that there were only two exhibitors, Certainly, one of these did a brisk trade, disposing of his plants at an extremely profitable rate, but I fanoy the A. and P. Association had other views than the fostering of trade in adding horticultural sections to the programmes of their shows. In making these additional classes members stated that they hoped thus to encourage the wives and daughters of farmers and townspeople to exhibit; and also to provide exhibits that would prove of special interest to lady visitors. The sub-committee appointed to deal with the horticultural section have signally failed to further these ideas, and have once again provided a programme that must discourage flower growers in general.—l am, etc., Eosa Eugosa. 11/4/04.
