RONGOTEA DRAINAGE.

Suggested Improvements.

(Own Correspondent.)

_ yesterday a meeting of the representatives of the Kongotea Dairy Company and of the Manawatu County Council was held to consider the best means of draining Kongotea. Among other correspondence reaa, was] a carefully prepared report from Cr Clark on the drainage system of Masterton, which he had inspected. The question was discussed in a conversational way, and though no definite decision was arrived at, it was generally understood that the questions' submitted were disposed of as follows i— 1. That the insanitary condition of certain places in the township could easily be remedied, and as the number of inhabitants was only about 200 and' the buildings generally were not congested, the undertaking of costly drainage works was not warranted. 2. That the Eongotea Dairy Company would, without delay, carry out certain suggestions made by the Department as to alterations and additions required to the company's septic tank. If these alterations and additions proved satisfactory, any nuisance now existing would be removed-

8. That the Council be recommended to_ lay concrete channelling from Mr Hickford's premises in the Square to Mr PenoeyVcorner in Thames street. This seemed to be the part brought out prominently in the Inspector's report. 4. This channel to be connected with the Company's drain in Medway street, leading to the septic tank. Certain provisions to be made in the chanuelling at Mr Penney's corner to allow the Dairy Company to make use of the storm water that would flow along the channelling.

5. That the Company be requested for written permission to connect the channelling with the Company's drain. The Dairy Company wrote stating that it was willing to allow the Council to make the necessary connections with the underground tanks, and also with the septic tanks. While agreeing with the proposals re the drainage, the Co. submit for the consideration of the Council the following suggestions :— 1 That shop waste would still continue to be a nuisance if carried in an open channel, therefore it is suggested that 6in pipes be substituted for the concrete channelling. (2) That the householders benefitted by the proposed drainage work shoujd be required to contribute towards cost of same.

The report and the Company's recommendation were considered and adopted. It was deoided to inform the Health Department of the Council's intention in the matter, and that steps be taken to pass by-laws necessary in dealing with the question.
