PERSONAL.
The many friends of Mr Otto Simpson will be pleased to learn that he has accepted a permanent engagement with Mr Lissaman, and returns to Palmerston in a few days. • This is an extract from the last official let er of the outgoing. Governor of British New Guinea to Mr C. A. W. Manckton, R.M., North E. Division (a son of Dr Monckton, of Feilding):—"ln leaving here, I regret to say for the last time, I desire to convey to you my very deeply grateful thanks, both official and personal, for your loyal devotion to your work and duty, and to me. It is "now little more than three years since I left you here (at Capo Nelson) with very little force and no other assistance to establish a state of peace, law and order amongst a number of perfectly savage tribes, who had no previous knowledge of the Government, and who were hostile and a menace to the whole coast. The result you have achieved in that . short time has attracted ? the attention ;of the Government you were under, both ' in the possession and in England, as well as in Australia. The credit for your work, though you are too good an officer to care for praise, is entirely your own. The ■ satisfaction I have the honour to share with you. I again wish to repeat my very grateful thanks to you and wish you still further success in your official and private carreer. I also wish to convey my thanks to your armed native police for their plucky and loyal devotion to you and the services they have rendered under you. (Signed) G. 11. Le Hunte, Lieutenani -Governor." We regret to hear that Mr E. S. Thynne, proprietor of the Manawatu Herald, Foxton, is indisposed and is. unable to leave his homestead near Motoa. Dr Bennett has advised Mr Thynne to take at least a month's rest from business. We sincerely hope Mr Thynne will derive the full benefit of such a course, and will speedily recover his usual state of health.
