Flood Water Complaints. Increase of Salaries. . The usual fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was Held last evening. Present—The Mayor, and Crs Haydon, Armstrong, Pringle, Johnston, Essex, Tolley, Goodger, and Jack. Mr C. N. Clausen wrote complaining" of toe accumulation of flood water at the corner of Short and Cuba streets.— Engineer to attend to the matter. A complaint about water flowing over Te Awe Awe-street was received from Mr J7. Strang.—Eeferred to the Borough Solicitor. Mrs M. A. Munro applied to have her premises connected with the water main. - Request granted. A request for the Council to prevent the overflow from a water trough, at the corner of Avenue and Fitzherbert-streets rnnning on tphis property, was received from Mr J. H. Hankins.—Engineer already had, the matter in hand. It was resolved that all maintenance contracts cfeposits be returned when applied for. Inspector's Report. The Inspector of Works in his report said that as soon as possible the metal carts would be put on to repair the broken portions of the^ Square streets. Eeporting in regard to'the recent improvements at the cemetery the Inspector stated the new gates Were completed and the grading at the entrance to enable tar and sanding operations to be carried out would be done at once. He suggested the construction of a post and rail fence to run the full length of the cemetery. Salaries Committee Report. The Salaries Committee recommended that the Town Clerk receive £250 per annum, the Inspector of Works £250 (he to give his entire services to the Council), and the assistant clerk .£225. Mr Collingwood to be appointed returning officer at dEIS yer annum. That the Inspector of Licenses salary remain as at present, lie to attend at the-"Council office at least one hour por day; that the remaining salaries be as at present; that it be a further recommendation that the Cqnncil give instruction that no: information be giyen through cho; t lephono with respect to rates or valuations. The report was briefly discussed, as was also an amendment moved by Cr Goodger that the salaries be—Town clerk £250, borough engineer assistant clerk JE2SO, office assistant's salary not to exceed £50.
