■ Borough councillors continued the direction of Borough affairs at an adjourned meeting last evening. A ratepayer, Josef Topee, wrote asking the Council to do something i>o j>rotect certain portions of Hokowhitu from flooding, and the matter was left to the Public Works Committee. Several other questions were referred to the same committee. The question of the Hokowhitu streets again came before the Council. After some discussion, in which several Councillors considered it wus high time something was done in the interests of residents' Cr COOKE moved, and it was carried, That Euahinc, Pahiatua, Manawatu and Seandia streets at Hokowhitu bo made in the ordinary way with watertables and waterways, to ensure surface drainage, but without footpaths. | At the last meeting of the Council, it was decided to apply to the Government for a £80,000 loan for drainage purposes, several Councillors considering that it was a good idea to ask for more than was actually wanted. The Treasury was evidently not of the same mind and replied to the effect that the extent of the Council's borrowing powers was only £20,000. In consequence, the Council decided to make a fresh application on a more modest scale for the £20,000.
