Commerce, which in 1830 did not reach twelve millions of fran.es par annum, now amount to more than 600 millions ; and, in all these figures, Tunis, perhaps the most prosperous of all French colonies, is not taken into account This African empire ia defended by a permanent army of 60,000 men, whicb, in case of war, would be increased immediately to 100,000 by the calling out of the Algerian rerervist3 of French nationality, without speaking of tbe numerous auxiliaries winch the natives could furnish.
