Foxton Racing Glub. A Successful Meeting. Convoy Wins the Cup.

With perfect weather, great field" and finely-contested races, the fir.* day of the annual meeting cf tha Foxton Racing Club was one of tho moat successful ever held on the club's piefiiy* situated and well-appointed jourse. The sporting public of tho Manawatu were liberal in their patronage, and fuliv 800 rlavelled to Foxton by tbe Feilding and Palmerston special train. The atteu drince was consequently a record one. The rasnag.mmt of tho meeting was esce'len 1, everything working with a smoothness which only accompanies well planned arrangements, and as usual visitors were treated with rare hospilalify, Tho fine fields and close finishes wers in themselves a compliment to the club's handicapper, Mr J. E. Henrys. Convoy ran a good race in the Cup, though be was ridden all out at the finish. The favourites justified the support of tho public in nearly every cas?. In the Maiden Hack the winner, Wairere, was supported to the extern of £346 nut of a total of £811 on the machine, and ihis in a field of eleven. The amount passed through tbe machine was £7506, aa against £5493 iuvesedou the first day of last year's meeting. The running was made in turn by Roseplot and Eiusicn, the latter taking charge of the field along the back stretch. At the bend into the straight Convoy, the top weight and favourit9, came away and, hard pressed, won a great race from Plaidio by a half a length, nearly four lengths separating the third and fourth horses. The good field cf eleven got well away, and passing the stand were running in close order. Rouble was the first to show in front, but at the bend was passtd by Alas, who was running sttoDgly. Entering the straight Wairere was seen to be wearing down the leaders on the outside, and once in the straight ebe obtained the lead. Entering the straight Otairi. the favourite, came away and was apparently making a canter finish when Mourner got in a great run aud furnished an exciting finish, Otairi passing the post with only a neck to the good.
