Hawera is forming a vigilance committee to work m conjunction with Taranaki and Auckland regarding the trunk line, the especial object being to promote the Mokau route. The southern parts of the island cannot afford to stand by quietly and watch efforts m this direction. The policy of the country should be to make railways as far from the seaboard as possible. For the Coast districts water carnage is sufficient m a new country, Hence all our sympathies are with the central route, whether it be from Mar ton, Wanganui, or Feilding. The same views obtain at Wellington, and m the Hawke's Bay district. Would it not be desirable for the southern parts of the Island to work unitedly m order to secure the central route, as against the Hawera-Taranaki-Auck-land party ? At the end of the year the general election will be held, and it is desirable public opinion should be educated to the necessity of united action. A combination of some kind should therefore be made, so as to secure the co-operation of Wellington, Wanganui, Napier, Manawatu, and Eangitikei,and we have no doubt the districts, mentioned, if they worked energetically and unitedly, would exercise a power which would defeat the attempt to expend an enormous sum of public money m a way that would tend to benefit one or two districts at the expense of the colony.
