The Daily Times. The oldest Manawatu journal : Established 1875. FRIDAY, FEB. 29, 1884. THE EDUCATION BOARD ELECTIONS.

Dubing the present month the School Committees are called upon to elect three members of the Education Board, m place ot Messrs Watt, Bridge, and Baker. The two former are standing for re-election. The latter is retiring. The other gentlemen nominated are Messrs Bate (of Hawera), Fry (Makino), Greenwood (Wanganui.), Poison and Sargeant (of the Wanganui rural district.) The Committees will probably re-elect Messrs Watt and Bridge, those gentlemen having attended to their duties satisfactorily m the past. For the third seat there will be considerable competition. Mr Bate stands as the representative of the Hawera County, that district not having at present a special rperesentative on the Board. Whether the Committees will see the matter m the same light is at least doubtful. Mr Fry, of Mak ; :o, has scarcely been such a succecs m local politics as to warrant him m hoping for general support, even m his own district while the Committees from neighboring Count* ties are rather likely to be jealous of Manawatu getting a third ... member. Hence we do not expect to see Mr fry returned. Messrs Poison and Sargeant will get hardly any support beyond their own immediate districts. Mr Greenwood, who held an important position on the Westland Education Board, is of necessity familiar with the Act. He is a gentleman well qualified for the position by education and experience of the world, while his professional duties require him to travel constantly from end to end of the educational district. We therefore regard him as the best fitted of the new candidates, and shall therefore expect to see Messrs Watt, 1 Bridge and Greenwood the new members.
