BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Palmerstou Borough Council wa.s held last evening. Present — His Worship the Mayor and Crs , Snelson, Mowlem, Walker, McNeil, Ferguson, Leary, Palmerson aud Dr Marriuer. Tbe newly elected' Councillor, Mr J7 Linton, subscribed to the usual declara- . tion and took his seat. i; The minutes of previous meeting were 1 iead and confirmed .. . Letters were read from Clerk cf Licensing Court relative to appointing a returning officer for election of Commit-; tee; from Under-Secretary Crown Lands, with the reply of the minister to the request of the deputation that certain sections s.hould be sent aside, for a hospital reserye. From District Engineer, with of ground required on the Square for increased railway accomodation; and from Returning officer noti flying election of Mi Linton as Councillor. It was resolved that Mr Haultain, Clerk of Court he. appointed returning officer for the Licensing Court elections. After. considerable discussion m reference to the subject of the acquistion of land for hospital purposes, a committee consisting of Crg. Linton,. Snelson and the Mayor, was appoiuted to arrange wivh the Wellington College Governors m respect to the land required. Tbe Couucil weut into Committee on the subject of increased railway accomodation, aud it was resolvod that the matter be referred to the. Works Committee to take action upon and rpporc to a special meeting of the Council. . A letter from Mr Milverton asking tbe Council to take steps to grade Main Street was aso referred to the Public Works Committee. The Put. lie Works Committee reported as follows ; — " We have accepted tenders fur the following works: — Formation m Scandia and Princess Streets and drain m Fergusson Mreet, J. M. Anderson at £93 . We have had before us the Engineer's Monthly Report, and have instructed bim to have the metal m the drain now being made m Botanical Rood saved. We ha^e likewise instructed him to prepare a report of the formation required m Main Street East, showing iv what manner it could be made available for the eemet'y. An account was also.received from the Wanganui Borough Council ampunt'ng to £12 10s as a contribution to tbe v cost of erecting additional words. It was explained that on a previous occasion the council had .refu-ed to contribute and on tbe.motion of Cr Linton, seconded by Cr Marriner, the council declined to grant any donation to. hospital additions m Wanganui. At tbis stage Cr Ferguson stated he was absent from the Council at a previous meeting when Cr Walker had made certaih charges against him, and be requested an explanation. Cr Walker reiterated the charges, and G-. Ferguson made a statement m contradiction which the Council resolved was perfectly satisfactory. . Cr Snelson presented a plan of proposed Street conneqling George Street and Coleman place, and proposed that the Town Clerk visit upon those who had promised to contribute and that the Works Committee he authorised to complete the purchase. as soon, a;* a sufficient amount was collected. This was seconded by Cr McNeil. After discussion an amendment was carried io the effect that the Council give a donation of £50 towards the purchase of Mr Da.wick's property for road purposes.; y It was resolved to attend at once to the matter of fixing a. tap at the rail" way tanks for drinking purposes. The Council then adjourned.
