The valuation list for the Manawatu Highways District, also the list for the Foxton Looal Bourd District are now open for inspection ; the former at the Board office in Palinerdton and the latter at the Board office in Foxton.

Mr Deard's letter shall appear in our next. It will be seen by advertisement that the local schools have i"e-opened this week. An extraordinary general meeting of the shareholders of the Foxton Pnblic Hall is called for the 25th inst. at 8 p.m. A meeting of the householders of Karere is to take place on Saturday the 26th instant for the purpose of electing a Local Committee under the new Education Act. A gale of unusual severity passed over the Wairarapa last week, doing considerable damage to buildings and fences in and around Masterton. We direct the attention of contractors to the advertisement of the Manawatu Highways Board calling for tenders for various public works throughout the Highways district. All tenders are to be sent in by the Ist proximo. Mr Dalryraple has received a telegram from Miss Stevens, teacher of the Stoney Creek School, stating that she will return to Foxton by next trip of the Jane Douglas, and resume her duties in connection with the school on the 24th inst. Mr S. Coleman, Land Agent, has just succeeded in disposing of a valuable 100 acre farm with improvements at a moat satisfactory figure. The purchaser we believe is one of the right sorb for this district, and will prove an acquisition to the locality in which he will in future reside. Mr Oaney of Palmerston has taken a photograph of the celebrated Gorge Bridge. Those who have not been through the . Gorge may gather from this picture some idea of the triumphs of art and nature as they are combined at this spot, and those who have travelled that way will find the photo an interesting souvenit\ It is pleasing to note the many enquiries for land improved and unimproved throughout the upper district of Manawatu. Travellers passing through, and visitors from Napier, Wairarapa, and other old settled districts are forcibly struck with the excellent quality of the soil, and its wonderful capacity for the production of grass. Many consider it equal to the famous Paiea district. The Eev. Charles Clark has returned from Taranaki, and will hold two of his most interesting lecture entertainments tonight and to-morrow night in the Foresters Hall, Palmerston. We cannot say which of the two lectures will take precedence, Charles Dickens is. his oldest lecture and may on this account corns first. We gather from the press critiques that this lecture comprises some of the finest dramatic impersonation ever witnessed in the colonies. Mr Clark not only deals with, the/, great author himself but impersonates some of the most striking characters of his novels, and our* readers may faintly imagine what such characters will be when such a master in the art of impersonation is the medium by which they will be brought to life. " Cromwell " is a newer lecture but it has attained a wonderful celebrity during the short time it lias been before' the public. Those of the localypublic who have not yet heard Mr Clark will do well not to miss the opportunity now offered, of enjoying something exceptional in the way of a treat. Those who have already heard him will probably come to hear him again without our recommendation. [Since the I above was in type, we have learned that the " lecture on Dickens will be delivered first,] ' The. Burgesses of this Borough will bear in mind the duty that devolves upon them on Friday next It is for them to decide whether or not the Council shall borrow, the sum of ten thousand. pounds for. public: wcrks within the Borough. We vhaye; already expressed oarselvea in f^rai* of the scheme, because we consider that 'the Borough requires something to start it, and to uphold it through the first' few. -years ! of its existence, or until it can father more strength than it now has». It is now for, the ratepayers to endorse or, veto the : policy, according as their judgement may dictate. The poll will take place 'between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 pin. It was resolved to from: a bucket brigade in the mean time and wait a favorable opportunity, of getting an Engine. The meeting in itself was a suooees as regards numbers offering their services ■■; 35 members were enrolled and a large l number have been nominated for the various offices. Court report of the case of Mouldin » Davis in which Mr WarburtonV name appears as solicitor for the defendant, t it has been explained to us that owing to the faot of Mouldin never having had a Crown Grant (simply a . transfer,) Which only cost him £2, Mr Warburton had to employ agents to trace this Crown Grant, and further to obtain the necessary signatures to documents, enabling Mouldin to get his Grant, and in addition paid the Government J63 4s, charges and accumulated fines on the document. It is further" ex- : plained that the sum of £19, with the £6 charges, was arranged, and money advanced : by find paid in Mr vVirburton's office, in the presence of both plaintiff and defendant, and that tha defendant never visited his solicitor in the absence of plaintiff.
