The Manawatu Times. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1877.
Our readers and the entire public munt fe.el pleased with the action of the Government just taken m connection with bo me of our great public wants. The Hutt Waikanae and Palmerston Railway Bill has passed, the endowment to the Port of Foxton sanctioned by the House of Rei preaentatives, the reserves- granted to the Borough of Palmerston and the proposed endowment of the County. These are all great events m the annals of bur history as a County. As far as we can see, we have no cause to regret the late cliauge of G-overninent. There is still one most important public convenience urgently needed for the district, viz, wharf extension at Foxton. This is indeed a necessity, ami of far more importance to the settlers inland than to the inhabitants of; the town itself. This matter should be pressed upon the notice of; the Government. We have f|equently noticed the inadequate wharf accommodation at Foxton andy pointed out the preat impediment thrown m the way of those connected with shipping matters.^ Wje^ b>ve fromtiirie to time tried to shew the loss sustained by the whole district, through the continuation', of such a suicidal state of things. We have urged the ; powers-that be to do justice to the [ district by extending our liHipping , facilities. We will again" say that it is our intention to continujburgihg this particular claim and go on agi- ■ tating until this most important 1 work is an established fact. The absence of facilities at a port like ours; means slo^death to the business of that Port/; jwhereas extensfen of facilities, on a moderate scale even, means fresh life thrown over the entire district, ah immediate expansion of our valuable timber trade, an increased number of vessels trading; tov, our port,; a pouring m of. capital" for profitable investment in^ coifnection^ : with machinery and timber, andj perhaps, -the. most important feature iof all, touicreased population, wnp witt be^ to settle down on some of the |)est land m New Zealand which at the present moment is lying idle vandt: useless; We think this matternsKould be dealt with as a district: matter and would suggest that the Chairman of the .County^^ Council ; cal%a public meeting, to be heldv'at some central place m the county, at which dele-; gates from Foxton, ;parnar, vorl,;Sandpn, Feildin^ and Palmerstori mightattend to discuss the. whole iSffiair. Strong resolutions might \6e passed which; we doubt not, woultl make a ? favorable impression on the present Government. No time shoiild: be lost m preliminaries. Tak e % decided coursiß at bnce m urging a ju^t claim. W& cpulo\ tell of^iuimerous vexations Ilißiaysih fprw^||ing timber from this port ; of extractors put to great inconvenience f |nd loss through Stoppage of workp on account of non-delivery of timjber ; of couniiermanaed; wjiije -i the article had been lying sometimes weeks at the port awaiting shipment. Since writingtheabove,: Wo,hayereceived intelligence that tl^ Foxton i Harbour iEnaowmeftt Bill |haa been rejected by the ifLegislative'v Council. We can scarcely credit this statement, knowing full well that the Wanganni Harbour has belen richly -. endowed with Y land at our doors. Surely the Government can never refuse to grant a portion to us. \
