The entertainment of the - Rose Brothers drew a good house on Wednesday night. The entertainment consisted of a medley of legerdemain, ventriloquism, music and the cabinet puzzle. Some of the card tricks are transparent enough to those who are close to the stage, bat there is sufficient m tlie entertainment to puzzle the closest observer. The cabinet seance is : a mystery well worth seeing but perhaps the pleasantest part of the performance to the music loving people of Palmerston was the singing of Miss Violet Rose. She has a well cultivated voice and of good compass, perhaps a little harsh m some of the inflections but there is no doubt of her being able to do justice to her songs; The entertainment was repeated on Thursday night but the house was poor and the proceedings lacked vigorr ' We are informed that the next "Foxtoti Choral Society's Concert will be of a much more lively nature than- the last as the members are how rehearsing, selections from the Operas' of Marsaniello, Madame Ang6t, and Maritaua. Their next concert will probably be held m- November. The woman Truenian, recently charged m Wellington- with the 'crime of infanticide, has been discharged from the Supreme Court as innocent. This was oneof the.most revolting cases that has for a long time come before the public. The. evidence* shews that theprisoner placed a living infant in' a vesr selj and thus left, it, gasping for threequarters of. an "hour till it died. This woinanisnow.a member of society again. On Thursday last one Albert Austen was brought, before Dr. Rockstrow, J.P., and Y. Monrad, Esq., J.P., charged with being a lunatic* Drs. Johnston and Skerman having certified to the man's insanity, the Court ordered him to be committed- to the Wellington Asylum. A fire occurred at Otakym Tuesday night by which a housV was totally demolished, and what is -worse,' two Maoris who were living m the house were burned to death. The names of the unfortunate creatures- are Hare Wirikaki and iLararaina Whawha. Sidney Skerman, Esq., M.R.C<S.., E., of Palmerston, has been appointed Medical" Referee under " The Government Insurance . and Annuities Act,' lß7&''- ; ' *• - -A It is believed that a new morning paper is to be started in' Wellington.
