Sunday. ■ A terrific gale has raged -for two days. There is a heavy sea on the coast, and rainjis falling m torrents. The steamer Yarra Yarra was over- ' whelmed- by a^ sea while entering castle- to-day/ She foundered with all hands. T , Monday. . Eighteen persons were lost by the foundering of the, Yarra. Gale abating. ' A bushranger stuck up an ,hqtel at, Benemere on Saturday night. A policeman shbt him dead. s . . ' Friday. The Suez mail arrived at Adelaide at midnight, and brings London dates to June 8. [There are no passengers for New Zealand.] ' - An engagement 'took place off the Peruvian coast, between British war ships Shah and Amethyst and a turret ' ram. The latter escaped after dark, but so damaged that it was forced to surrender, to the Peruvian squadron. Her crew had joined the re volutionary*pre sident and committed piratical acts on British subjects. A German surgeon from Ardahan reports that after capturing the fortress the Russians plundered every house, violated every woman, and set fire- to the , hospitals, burning the wounded soldiers alive.
