MANAWATU HIGHWAY BOARD.

A meeting was held m the. Board Room on Friday, 13th April, 1877. COMMISSIONEES PRESENT. Messrs McNeil (Chairman), McEwen, Dairy mple, and McPherson. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read, and on. the motion of Mr Mc^wen seconded by Mr Dalrymple were confirmed. . COKBESPONDENCE. Letter from Public Works Office, m reply to an application from the Board for the expenditure of £350 on the extension of the Earere metalling contract, stating, that the G-ovcrriment decline to any further expenditure m connection with that work. Letter from Walter Johnston, M.H.R., on the same subject. , ; Circular from the Chairman of the Manawatu County Council, asking for the opinion of the Board on' the following resolution ; — " That m the opinion of this Council the Eating Act now m force is bad m principle, inasmuch as it taxes industry, and bears unfairly on settlers with small holdings, and therefore tends to retard the progress of the colony. iTJiat the'. The Secretary was instructed- to ac■t knowledge the receipt of the letter. Letter from Mr H. Rockel, Carnarvon, asking for permission to erect a . gate across the Kosina Road line adjoining his property. i- [Resolved, That the matter lay over ' until next meeting, as is usual with all such applications. . f The minutes of the late public meeting of settlers m the llangitikei line district, with resolutions against the present^iecretary and Inspector of WprtfM^re laid before the meeting by , the ChaTwhan. Eesolved, That the Secretary acknowledge the receipt of resolutions and inform the Chairman of the meeting that the person acting as Secretary and- Inspector of Works, js the servant of the Board, and responsible only to the Board, and if he is incompetent, to carry out the duties i delegated to him, the members of this ' Board feel that they are not competent to represent the various Wards in /the district. , TENDEKS.
