We have received a circular from the Chairman of the Manawatu County Council, embodying the following resolutions, which, were passed, at a meeting of the Council held on the 28th February last :— . "That m the opinion of this Council the Eating Act now m force is bad m principle, inasmuch as it taxes industry and bears unfairly on settlers with small holdings, and therefore tends to retard the progress of the colony. " That the Chairman be requested to write to the Chairmen of the various Councils and Road Boards m the Provincial District of Wellington, -1 asking their earnest co-operation m urging upon the Government and the Parliament during its next session the importance of having the said Act repealed." •\That so far as rural holdings are concerned the land be elassifiedi &nd an acreage rate be substituted m lieu of the present system, and that a circular be printed embodying the resolution." Similar circulars . have been sent to the Chairmen of the various.Councils and Highway Boards throughout^the Provincial: District of W^ellingtou ; and the Chairman of the Maria watu County Council expresses; it as his belief that it would be of advantage if a meeting of these Chairmen could be arranged before the meeting of the General Assembly^ so that cer-

tain defects m the Counties Act and the other Acts m connection with it could be discussed, and any suggested alterations could be laid before the Government. As we have already dwelt upon the subject matter contained m the foregoing resolutions, we refrain from further comment at present.
