EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD,” DECEMBER 29, 1915.
Britain had decided that unmarried men must servo in the Armed Forces. Minor Cabinet resignations were expected as a result of this decision. An earlier message stated that Mr Lloyd George had threatened to resign if conscription were not brought in for single men. Largo German, Austrian, and Bulgarian forces were converging on Salonika on the Franco-British fines. The enemy was reported to bo preparing for a great offensive in this sector. The New Zealanders and Sikhs had successfully engaged the Senussi tribesmen on the Tripoli border. In this action, which had put the Senussi to flight, the Allied casualties were light. Tho Liverpool Handicap, of £4OO, nine furlongs, run on the third day of the Manawatu meeting, had been won by Mr A. B. Williams’s Chortlo (S. Reed) with Mr Duncan Fraser’s Square Deal (Manson) second and Mr J. Harle’s Byron (A. Reed) third.
