AMERICAN MINE DISASTER
NEW YORK, Dec. 27. Hope has been abandoned for between 30 and 50 coalminers who were entombed today by an underground blast at Pineville (Kentucky). Rescue workers encountered an inferno of burning debris and coal 3100 feet from the mine entrance and half-way to the trapped men. Mr D. Harrington, a United States Mines Bureau official, said a violent explosion probably killed all the miners. ■ ,
