BANDITS HUNTED
(Rec. 1 p.m.) SINGAPORE, Dec. 27. Hundreds of infantrymen of the 25th Indian division have launched a major round-up of gangs of bandits, who for months have been terrorising civilians along the jungle-clad lower reaches of the Perak River, says the Straits Times. The drive was ordered after the bandits had abducted six civilians, beaten them to death and thrown their bodies down the shaft of a tin mine. Indian veterans of the Arakan campaign in Burma made a four-hour trip down the river in landing-craft, ordered out the villagers for identification parades, and made a number of arrests.
