POVERTY IN TOKIO
RELIEF MEASURES. FREE FOOD AND CLOTHES. (N.Z. Press Association.—Copyright.) (Rec. 2.20 p.m.) TOKIO, Dec. 26. General Mac Arthur's headquarters has ordered the Japanese Government to distribute free of charge to the hard-pressed population 20,000 metric tons of food, and 3,000,000 garments from the former army stores. , Headquarters has also approved of the Imperial Household's contribution of 10,000,000 yen for the _ relief of bombing victims and destitute repatriates in Tokio.
The Metropolitan Police Board estimates that 40 per cent, of the city's population at present are depending on the emergency distribution of rice through local police stations. The police also reported a sharp increase in the number- of babies abandoned in Tokio streets, presumably hecause of the parents' inability to find food and shelter for them.
