CHECK ON CRIME
QUICK RESULTS
MANY DESERTERS FOUND (N.Z. Press Association.—Copyright.) (Rec. 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 14. The drive to check the crime wave has brought quick results, says the Daily Telegraph. Scores of-deserters have been rounded up, some of whom have been hiding for.two or three years. Scotland Yard has arrested in the last 24' hours five men who were allegedly concerned in various recent hold-ups. The road block system enabling the police to comb out specific areas has proved successful in London and may be extended to the Home Counties.
Incidents yesterday included one concerning a shirt-sleeved gunman who, flourishing a revolver, made his escape on a London bus after assaulting a policeman who demanded to see his identity card. The man struck the policeman and jumped on the bus after a struggle, leaving his jacket in the policeman’s hands. Armed police guarded Friendly Society officials collecting £75,000 from a Hammersmith bank for the society’s Christmas payments.
