Mr A. I. Childs, who has recently been discharged from the Services after a period overseas, has been appointed to the staff of the West End School and will take up his duties when the school opens next year.

Mr G. Delamore has been appointed to the teaching staff of the Hutt Valley High School. Mr Delamore is renowned throughout New Zealand as one of the most brilliant Rugby fiveeighths in the game today, and played in the Manawatu competitions as a member of the Ohakea Air Force team.

The special committee for the selection of Rhodes Scholars for the Dominion announces that the applications of the following graduates have been forwarded to Britain for approval by the trustees: Lieut. G. L. Cawkwell (Auckland), Capt. B. F. Harris (Auckland) and Lieut. J. W. Ridley (Canterbury). All have seen active service overseas.

Lieut.-General E. Puttick, the Chief of the New Zealand General Staff and G.O.C. _of the Military Forces, who is retiring from his present position at the end of the year, was entertained at an official Government farewell in the Cabinet room at Parliament Buildings yesterday. A number of speakers, including the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser), spoke of the long and efficient service of General Puttick and expressed the hope that he would have a happy retirement.

Mr W. P. Anderson, who has not been able to undertake his normal duties as a teacher at the Boys’ High School owing to illness over the past two terms, was now absent from Palmerston North for a change and for treatment, said Mr J. Murray, rector of the school, at the annual breakup ceremony last evening. Those connected with the school and many others knew well of Mr Anderson’s work for the school and for cricket, and all would be very happy to see him again, improved in health and able to resume his duties.
