BUILDING TRADE
REDUCTION IN HOURS.
(Press Assn.) WELLINGTON, Nov 23 The Minister of Works (Mr Semple) said today that with the revocation of the Essential Building Works Labour Legislation Modification Order as from August 1 the building industry reverted wholly to the various award conditions, but as the Pacific War was then still continuing the request was made to industry to operate on a 44-hour basis, not on 40 hours a week as provided by the awards. Now, because hostilities had ceased and demobilisation of many men was pending, together with a likelihood of the supply position for materials remaining acute for some time, it bad been decided to reduce the hours from December 1 in the building industry throughout the Dominion to 40, based on a five-day week. Only particular classes of work carrying a high priority would employ labour in excess of 40 hours a week, and in such cases the award terms would he complied with as far as the rates'of pay were concerned.
