Londoners are drinking considerably less beer than they did, but smoking four times as much .tobacco —according to the latest statistics. Well, it’s the same story in Now Zealand, and the greatly increased demand for the tobacco is not altogether due to the increase in population. It’s largely attributable to the rate at ■which we all live now and tho rush and hurry of modern life. People crave for something to relievo the nervous tension,, and find that tobacco helps considerably. Tho ever-growing demand for the latter has been far more marked in New Zealand since the 'introduction of “toasted,” which has fairly captured the public taste and is actually preferred by smokers innumerable to tho imported article. This is by no means surprising, because “toasted” is not oiily of the very highest grade, but so free, comparatively, from nicotine, | thanks to toasting, as to be safe for even |,the heaviest snooker. RAILWAY SEAT RESERVATIONS ADVANCE BOOKING PERIOD EXTENDED APPLICATIONS for reserved seats and sleepingberths for journeys on or before January 12, 1946, will be accepted at stations from which trains commence their journey, up to one calendar month ahead of travel date, and other stations up to one calendar month and two days ahead of travel date. Applications for reservations for return within one month of the commencing date of the outward journey may be lodged at the time application for the outward journey is made.
