MAIN TRUNK ROUTE OPEN
(Press Assn.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 2. The Auckland-Wellington expresses used the normal Main Trunk route tonight unexpectedly. The subsidence at Kakalii became static late on Thursday night after the rain had ceased, and the repairs carried out have made the line safe temporarily, though trains will need to pass over the repaired stretch at a slow speed. Railway officials at Wellington said tonight that the news that the line was clear came as a great surprise to them. From earlier reports they had received from the affected area it was thought the line near Kakalii would be impassable for a number of days. The slip at Hihitahi was cleared at 6.30 tonight, and both passenger and goods trains were thus enabled to pass through the normal route.
