BAN ON PANAMA CANAL
POSSIBLE LOSS OF TRADE. LONDON, Sept. 27.
Some British shipping experts express the opinion that the Panama Canal ban will seriously affect British trade, says the Daily Mail. One shipping official declared that the four or five days' extra sailing which the Cape Horn and Suez routes entail would cancel out the £2OOO which the 10,000-ton ship would pay for Panama Canal dues. Furthermore, there would be extra payment to the. crews and more food and oil would be required. Shippers would naturally choose the cheapest and quickest way of .transporting their cargoes. That would be by American ships travelling through the Panama Canal. Accordingly, Britain would lose trade. ••'••.
The Daily Mail adds that a Ministry of War Transport official stated the Government would bear any extra cost "in the meantime."
