OBITUARY

DR. W. F. GODFREY

Service in the South African war and periods of practice in Scotland and in Canada were incidents in the life of Dr. William Fowler Godfrey—who passed away recently—prior to his coming to New Zealand and commencing practice in Palmerston North in Iylß. Dr. Godfrey was born in May, 1874, being the second son of an Edinburgh businessman, and lie received his education at Daniel Stewart's College, Edinburgh, and at Edinburgh University, where he graduated M. 8.. CM., in 1898. He practised in various country and mining districts until 191)1, vviien no proceeded to South Africa as an Army surgeon. He was in Alrica for four years and served during that time with various line regiments. At the end of the war he was with a "flying column", the equivalent of a modern commando unit. Dr. Godfrey remained in the Army for four years and returned to Edinburgh, where he took two post-graduate courses, specialising in eve, ear, nose and throat, and chert troubles. For a year he was clinical assistant in the eye department of the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Dr. Godfrey married and went to Canada in 1907" and practised in- Carberry, Manitoba, for 10 years, at the end of which time lie came to New Zealand, arriving in January. 1918, to take up practice in Palmerston North. Dr. Godfrey is survived by his widow (Mrs A. J. K. Godfrey, of Grey Street, Palmorston North), two daughters, Mesdames L. S. Andrew, of Palmerston North, and S. Wright, of "Greystoke", Tutaenui, Marton, and one son, Mr James iv. li. Godfrey, of Palmerston North! There are also surviving five brothers, Rev. Robert Godfrey, M.A., Ph.D. (Greenock, Scotland) and Messrs John Godfrey, Alexander J. Godfrey and James Godfrey (all of British Columbia, Canada) and Thomas Godfrey (Cambridge, England), and one sister, Mrs Herbert Dunton (also of British Columbia).
