NEW ZEALAND BEATEN
CRICKET AT SCARBOROUGH. (Rec. 9.20 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 4. Mr Leveson-Gower's Eleven beat the New Zealand team at Scarborough by eight wickets. New Zealand resumed batting, requiring 242 to wipe off their first innings deficit. James and Jacobs opened dourly, but after Robins came on the scoring rate quickened, James sending him to the boundary four times. Fifty came up within an hour. Jacobs was out when he late cut a ball from Matthews towards second slip. Donnelly opened brilliantly, his' first three scoring strokes being boundaries. Hutton and Matthews quietened the batsmen until Donnelly pulled Matthews for «ix. James, just before lunch, was caught at short leg. At lunch New Zealand required 90 to avoid an innings defeat, the score being two wickets for 157. The New Zealanders declared their innings closed "with the score at 312 for seven wickets and Mr Leveson-Gower's Eleven • scored the necessary 63 runs to win in 25 minutes. The scores were : Leveson-Gower's Eleven.—First innings : 472. Second innings: 63 for two wickets (Hutton 18, Washbrook 27). New Zealand.—First innings: 220. Second innings : 312 for 7 wickets declared (Donnelly 86, Ridland 44, Burgess, not out, 61).
